Retreats: an honest field guide

A retreat can reset a practice — or become an expensive week of disappointment. The difference is almost entirely in the choosing.

Yoga holidays

Two classes a day plus beaches, excursions and good food. Wonderful as a vacation; modest as practice. Go if rest is what you actually need — that is a legitimate goal, just name it honestly.

Intensive practice retreats

Four to six hours of daily practice: asana, pranayama, philosophy. Physically demanding and genuinely transformative for committed students. Not a first step for beginners.

Silent meditation retreats (vipassana)

Days of silence, ten or more hours of sitting, no phones, no books, no eye contact. The deepest and the hardest format — a pressure cooker for the mind. Powerful, and not to be undertaken casually; read the safety notes of any center carefully and be honest with their health questionnaire.

Destinations and their characters

Fair prices, roughly

For a week including lodging and meals: budget ashram-style stays in India run a few hundred dollars; mid-range retreats worldwide cluster around $1,000–$1,800; premium resort formats go well past $3,000. Donation-based vipassana centers (in the S.N. Goenka tradition) charge nothing at all — you give what you can, after. A price far below or above these bands deserves a second look, not a deposit.

Red flags — walk away

Questions to ask before any deposit

  1. Who exactly teaches, and can I read independent reviews of their past retreats?
  2. What is the daily schedule, hour by hour?
  3. What is the group size, and the cancellation policy in writing?
  4. What is included — really? Airport transfers, meals, mats, excursions?
  5. Who do participants call if something goes wrong on site?
A legitimate organization answers these five questions cheerfully and in writing. Evasion on any of them is your answer.

Prepare the ground first

A retreat amplifies a practice; it rarely creates one from zero. Four weeks of our home program plus a daily ten-minute sit will multiply the value of any retreat you choose — and help you tell deep practice from expensive scenery.
